What's the largest amount of money you've paid for a motorcycle? However much it was, we'd bet it was nowhere near as expensive as this Brough Superior SS100. This 1928 model is up for auction next month in Italy. The estimated selling price is €500,000 - €700,000 (£422,260 to £591,164)! To put things into perspective, the average price of a UK home is £217,502.

Meet "Moby Dick". Nicknamed the 'fastest privately owned machine in the world' by Motor Cycling magazine in 1931. Its 1140cc engine was tuned by George Brough and JAP (J.A. Prestwich) to provide an additional 13hp. This not being enough for the owner, more modifications were made. After increasing the compression ratio and fitting higher-lift cams, lightened valves and twin Amal carburettors, power was increased by another 8hp to 65hp. That's 21hp over the standard engine.

The bike's seen a career in racing as well as a period in storage before being lovingly restored in 1997. If you like what you see and you have the “spare” half a million, head along to Villa Erba on 27th May for the auction.
