A big increase in motorcycle tests taken

So are we heading for many more motorcyclists on the roads?

Well here is a bit of good news to brighten your June! Even if it is behaving a bit more like April out there, it is not putting new would-be motorcyclists off at all.

The number of potential motorcyclists in the UK looks to be rising if the figures for people now taking the motorcycle test are anything to go by. This is according to an analysis of government data by motorcycle insurance specialist Bikesure.

DVSA - the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency figures show that previously, the number of people taking the two motorcycle test modules dropped, following the introduction of a new, more difficult European licensing system in January 2013.

However the statistics reveal that 5,022 more module one tests and 5,079 more module two tests were taken in 2014-15 than in the same period last year. This, coupled with the fact that monthly motorcycle sales in 2015 have consistently come in at more than 11% higher compared to the start of 2014, make the outlook promising for UK motorcycling.

Each quarter of 2014-15 so far is up between 10 and 17 per cent more than the same period in 2013-14.

A Bikesure spokesperson said :

"The data shows the number of riders taking tests in the first nine months of this financial year is only just short of the total number for the whole of 2013-14. So looking ahead, it's very likely the next set of DVSA statistics will show the number of riders taking tests across the UK is at its highest level for two years. We’ll have to wait to see what the official figures say in June, but it looks like it was a great year for the motorcycle industry."

"Looking at the bottom end of that range, an increase of approximately 10 to 12 per cent in test numbers in the final three months of 2014-15 would push the total for the year over the 52,000 mark,"

To support this positive trend, the pass rates for both modules of the test taken, bear this out with higher pass rates in 2014-15 than the same period in 2013-14.

The MCIA have been gathering feedback across the UK and are finding that there's an increasing demand for both second hand and new powered two wheelers – which makes sense with the increase in motorcycle tests being taken. All in all more folks on two wheels, that's what we like to see :0)
